Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE)-04

Name: Yaoyao

Gender: Female

Age: 10 years old

Nationality: Chinese

Diagnosis: Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE)

At the age of 7, Yaoyao (a pseudonym) began noticing the emergence of red rashes on her face, which gradually spread throughout her body. Alongside these symptoms, she experienced recurrent oral ulcers and persistent joint pains, prompting her family to seek medical attention. After thorough examinations at the hospital, Yaoyao was diagnosed with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), an autoimmune disease known for its complex and unpredictable course.

Over the course of three years, Yaoyao underwent intensive treatment and regular follow-ups at the hospital. Despite escalating medication dosages nearing their maximum, her condition showed little improvement. Concurrently, her proteinuria, an indicator of kidney involvement in SLE, continued to escalate, causing distress and concern among her family members.

Through a trusted friend's referral, Yaoyao was introduced to Lu Daopei Hospital, where she participated in a groundbreaking CAR-T clinical trial. Following a stringent evaluation process, she was accepted into the trial on April 8. Subsequently, on April 22, she underwent cell collection, and on May 12, received the infusion of CAR-T treated cells. Her successful discharge on May 27 marked a pivotal moment in her treatment journey.

During her first month follow-up, medical professionals observed significant progress, notably a reduction in proteinuria. At subsequent visits, her skin rashes had nearly disappeared, with only a faint rash remaining on her right cheek. Crucially, her proteinuria had resolved completely, and her SLE Disease Activity Index (SLEDAI-2K) score indicated a mild disease state, less than 2.

Empowered by the efficacy of CAR-T cell therapy, Yaoyao gradually tapered off her medications under careful medical supervision. Remarkably, she has been medication-free for over four months, attesting to the sustained remission achieved through this innovative treatment approach.

Yaoyao's journey underscores the transformative potential of CAR-T therapy in managing severe autoimmune conditions like SLE, offering hope and tangible outcomes where traditional treatments may fall short. Her experience serves as a beacon of optimism for patients and families navigating similar challenges, illustrating the promising future of personalized medicine in autoimmune disease management.
